Dormaahene receives appointment in Mahama’s administration

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the revered Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has received top appointment in Mahama’s Administration. He has been elevated to the Court of Appeal as President John Dramani Mahama appoints twenty High Court judges to strengthen Ghana’s appellate bench.

The traditional leader, known in legal circles as Justice Daniel Mensah, was among the distinguished jurists sworn in on October 2, 2025, marking a significant milestone in both his judicial career and the nation’s judiciary. The Dormaahene, who also serves as Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, brings decades of legal expertise and traditional wisdom to the appellate court.

The newly appointed justices will join the Court of Appeal Bench, which maintains divisions across the country with a registry situated in Tamale. The Tamale division serves virtually all the northern sector regions, including Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, and Northern regions, ensuring judicial accessibility to citizens in these areas.

Among the notable appointees is Justice Senyo Amedahe, a long-serving High Court Judge at Koforidua, renowned for his rulings and judicial duties in the case of the late Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency. Dr. Richmond Osei-Hwere, a legal academic celebrated for his role in appeal proceedings in the Agradaa case, also makes the distinguished list.

The appointments extend to siblings Justice Apangano Achibonga and Justice Mariama Samo, who currently sit on the Adenta High Court Bench, demonstrating the depth of qualified legal minds being elevated to serve at the appellate level

Public reception of the appointments has been mixed, with social media commentary reflecting the politically charged atmosphere surrounding judicial appointments. Some observers have praised the Dormaahene’s elevation, noting his active stance on national issues, while others have questioned the timing and political considerations behind the selections.

These appointments are expected to strengthen the judiciary’s reach across the country and enhance the efficiency of appellate proceedings, bringing experienced legal minds to address the growing caseload in Ghana’s courts.
