The Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana do not operate independently; They are mandated by Law to represent the interest of the good people of Ghana in Parliament.
However, it is deeply disappointing that many MPs seem to have forgotten this fundamental duty. The recent absence of some MPs during crucial events such as the State of the Nation’s Address is not just a failure on their part, but a blatant disregard for the trust placed in them by the citizens of Ghana. It is indeed insulting to see MPs neglecting their responsibilities, especially considering that they are entrusted to be the eyes, ears and mouths of the people in Parliament. Instead of engaging in meaningful debates and contributing to national development, they often engage in petty politics and childish behaviour.
This behaviour is worsened by the fact that decisions made by the president, which directly impact the lives of Ghanaians are often becomes rubber-stamp by these same MPs.
Furthermore, the evasion of accountability particularly concerning the handling of loans and other important matters are unacceptable. Example of such misconduct during the vetting process handle by the vetting committee is so shameful.
Instead of asking right questions they instead try to defend their political parties. Ghanaians deserve better than to be taken for granted by their elected representatives. The intervention of former presidents to urge MPs to fulfill their duties is a clear indication of the sorry state of our leadership.
It is evident that many MPs prioritize personal and party interests over the well-being of the nation. This selfish and short-sighted approach not only undermines the principles of the democracy, but it also damages the fabric of our society. The Save Ghana Movement, with a heavy heart, declares that Parliament should be dissolved.
It is time to reset and rebuild our governance structures to truly serve the people of Ghana.
