Ghana’s leading sanitation firm, Zoomlion Company has publicly refuted claims that it is responsible for the salaries and alleged underpayment of public sanitation workers across the country.
The company asserts that these workers are not its employees and that their compensation falls under the purview of the Ministry of Youth and Employment Agency.
Speaking on the matter though the airwaves (Kessben FM) Zoomlion’s Corporate Affairs Officer, Madam Sophia Kudjorge, clarified that Zoomlion’s role is primarily as a contractor responsible for waste collection and management under a government agreement.
According to Kudjorge, the Ministry of Youth and Employment Agency is responsible for recruiting and paying of the sanitation workers.
Zoomlion, she explained, fulfills its contractual obligations by making payments to the Ministry of Youth and Employment Agency when funds are received from the government.
Kudjorge emphasized that Zoomlion provides sanitation workers with essential materials like wellington boots, long brooms, and disinfectants to facilitate their work, but holds no direct employer-employee relationship.
She advised disgruntled workers to address their grievances to the Ministry of Youth and Employment Agency and not at Zoomlion.
Furthermore, Kudjorge addressed rumors circulating on the social media regarding the cancellation of Zoomlion’s contract.
She clarified that the original contract expired in June 2024 but was extended to November 1st, 2024, pending renewal.
She revealed that the government intends to put the sanitation job up for public bidding.
Kudjorge expressed confidence in Zoomlion’s ability to secure the contract again due to its proven track record and access to necessary equipment.
She believes that the company is well-positioned to win the bid and continue its role in managing Ghana’s waste.
