I can’t form my own party if Npp fails me – Kwabena Agyepong

In a moment of political defiance that has stirred debate across Ghana’s political spectrum, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has issued a stern warning to his party: if sidelined in the race for leadership, he may break ranks and establish his own political movement—tentatively dubbed the “KAA Party.”

Speaking during a candid interview on UTV, Agyapong expressed frustration over what he perceives as internal resistance to his presidential ambitions. “I can choose not to join the NPP party,” he declared, “and I can establish my own party if they fail to choose me.” His statement, delivered with conviction, has sparked intense speculation about the future of the NPP and the possibility of a major political realignment ahead of the 2028 elections.

Agyapong, known for his reformist stance and calls for integrity within the party, has long positioned himself as a voice of principle in Ghanaian politics. His latest remarks suggest a growing impatience with the NPP’s internal power structures and a readiness to chart an independent course if necessary.

Political analysts are divided. Some view his statement as a strategic bluff aimed at pressuring the party’s leadership to take his candidacy seriously. Others believe it reflects a deeper disillusionment that could lead to a genuine breakaway—one that might attract reform-minded voters disenchanted with traditional party politics.

The idea of a “KAA Party” has already begun trending on social media, with supporters praising Agyapong’s courage and critics warning of fragmentation within the center-right political space. Meanwhile, the NPP has yet to issue an official response, though insiders suggest the party is watching the situation closely.

As Ghana’s political terrain shifts, Agyapong’s ultimatum may prove to be more than rhetoric. Whether it becomes a rallying cry for a new movement or a turning point within the NPP, one thing is clear: Kwabena Agyei Agyapong is no longer playing by the old rules—and the party he once served may have to reckon with that.
