Dr. David King Boison, a maritime and port expert, AI consultant, and lead consultant for the AI Africa Project, has announced an ambitious initiative to train 11 million youth, private, and public institutions in artificial intelligence (AI) across Africa. Sponsored by the African Diaspora Central Bank and the Vanuatu Trade Commission-Ghana, the program aims to empower the continent in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The AI Africa Project has commenced in Ghana, targeting 1 million Ghanaians, with over 30,000 individuals already benefiting from training. So far, the initiative has trained approximately 50,000 individuals, including members of state institutions, private organizations, universities, and independent learners.
“We have a contract with Knowledge Web Center to train 5 million Africans,” Dr. Boison stated. “Our agenda is to train 100,000 Africans who will then train the remaining 5 million.” The project has already produced certified AI trainers, many of whom started with zero knowledge of AI but have now become facilitators within months.
As part of the initiative, 5,000 slots have been allocated for participants under the Ipada program, with more trainers expected to be deployed soon. The project has also extended its reach beyond Ghana, with Nigerian trainers joining the initiative.
In a major development, Dr Boison revealed that an agreement has been signed between the Vanuatu Trade Commission, the African Diaspora Central Bank, and Rwanda to train more than 1 million Rwandans in AI. However, according to Rwanda’s ambassador, the goal is to train up to 3 million individuals.
“AI is projected to contribute $15.7 trillion to global GDP by 2030,” Dr. Boison explained. “Africa cannot afford to be left behind. In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we must lead, not follow.”
The project aims to develop deep learners, machine learning experts, and AI consultants to drive innovation and economic transformation across the continent. Already, some trainees have created AI-based products and launched them on platforms like the Play Store, attracting users from around the world.
With AI expected to revolutionize government operations, education, research, and various economic sectors, the AI Africa Project stands as a game-changer in Africa’s technological advancement. Rwanda, in particular, is poised for a digital transformation, leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and innovation across industries.
This initiative marks a historic step in positioning Africa as a leader in AI and technological development, ensuring that the continent is not left behind in the global AI revolution.
