The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Amenfi East in the Western region, Hon. Frederick Korankye has called on individuals having issues with mining activities in the area to seek clarification from the Minerals Commission Office.
He voiced concern about the inaccurate reporting by certain media organizations, stating that the areas labeled as galamsey sites by some journalists are not true since such areas have been captured for legal mining and not in the forest reserve as reported.
Setting the records straight, he said, the said areas have been released to four mining companies, for legal mining and perhaps there was the need for clarification before the reportage.
The MCE emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices and the need for active citizen participation in monitoring and regulating mining operations.
“As a municipality, we are committed to ensuring that mining activities are conducted in a safe, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible manner. We urge all to report any suspicious or illegal mining activities to the Minerals Commission for prompt action and not take to things on air without verification”.
“The Minerals Commission as the primary regulatory body responsible for overseeing mining activities in Ghana. Reporting concerns to the Commission will help us all than resorting to emotional reportage”, he emphasized.
The MCE praised the government’s initiatives to formalize the mining sector and ensure responsible mining practices. He said the Municipality is putting in efforts to combat the activities of the illegal mining activities in the area.
“We appreciate the government’s commitment to protecting our environment and promoting sustainable development, we are committed to combating the illegal mining activities to ensure a sustainable environment” the MCE said.
He clarified that the Amenfi East Municipal Assembly will maintain communication with residents, mining companies, and stakeholders to ensure the community benefits from mining activities.
“Let’s work together to protect our environment, our resources, and our future,” the MCE concluded.
