Ghana is in mourning following the tragic loss of two government ministers and six others in a fatal helicopter crash earlier today. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the country, claimed the lives of high-ranking officials and support staff during what authorities confirm was an official duty mission.
In a solemn statement issued shortly after the announcement, Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed his deep sorrow and extended condolences to President John Dramani Mahama and the entire nation.
“A while ago, I communicated to the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, my deepest condolences following the heart-wrenching news of the loss of two of our nation’s Ministers and six others in a helicopter crash earlier today,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He reflected on the sacrifice of the victims, noting: “The fallen men paid the ultimate price in the service of our motherland, leaving a shocked nation in pain. I know most of the deceased personally and equally feel a sense of loss to see their demise under such horrid circumstance
Dr. Bawumia also expressed the shared grief of his family and political party: “Samira, I, the Bawumia family, and the NPP join the nation in mourning them. May the good Lord grant the bereaved families, the Government and people of Ghana strength and healing in this time of tragedy.”
Though investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, early reports suggest the helicopter encountered severe weather while traveling over the Volta Region. Emergency response teams were deployed swiftly, but all eight passengers on board were confirmed dead at the scene.
The President has declared a week of national mourning, ordering flags to be flown at half-mast and calling for unity in a moment of profound national grief.
Further details, including the identities of the victims, are expected to be officially released by the Ministry of Information in the coming hours. Tributes continue to pour in from across the political divide, underscoring the collective loss felt by all Ghanaians.
