Burn our churches if Kennedy Agyepong looses the Npp presidential primaries – Prophet Owusu Bempah and El Bernard declare

Two well-known Ghanaian clerics, Reverend Owusu Benpa and Prophet El Bernard, have sparked national controversy after making bold statements about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming flagbearer election. Speaking separately in their churches, they declared strong support for Kennedy Agyapong, who is contesting in the party’s January 31, 2026, primaries, and warned of serious consequences if he does not emerge victorious.

Their comments, later broadcast on Ghana Plus TV, have intensified discussions about the role of religion in political affairs. The clerics explained that their stance was based on personal conviction, arguing that Agyapong possesses the qualities they believe Ghana needs in its next leader.

Reverend Owusu Benpa was quoted as making a dramatic remark during his sermon, suggesting extreme reactions if Agyapong loses. Prophet El Bernard echoed similar views, describing Agyapong as the only candidate fit to lead the party into the next general elections.

These declarations have drawn mixed reactions. Critics say religious leaders should avoid tying spiritual authority to political choices, warning that such comments could pressure followers and blur the line between faith and politics. Supporters, however, argue that the statements simply reflect strong belief and loyalty, not literal calls for action.

Political analysts note that as the primaries approach, endorsements from influential figures—especially religious leaders—can heavily influence grassroots supporters. Legal experts have also cautioned that even rhetorical threats could be viewed as incitement under Ghanaian law.

So far, the NPP has not officially responded, but observers say party leaders are watching closely as the highly anticipated primary draws nearer.
