Clergy expresses deep disappointment in GNAT for demanding high percentage on school feeding funds

The founder and leader of the Christ Power Miracle Mission Church, Very Rev. Anthony Kwarteng has voiced his profound disappointment with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) following its recent threats to stage a nationwide demonstrations.

The Association’s ultimatum comes in response to a government policy of allocating 40% of the Senior High School feeding grant to headmasters to support school matrons.

The Teachers’ Union has been advocating for a higher percentage for its members and threatening protests against the Minister for Education Hon. Iddrisu Haruna that if their demands are not met.

However speaking to the correspondent in an interview Rev. Kwarteng argued that the teachers anger is misdirected.

While acknowledging that he does not wholly oppose to their demands for better conditions, he asserted that the focus should be on accountability within the school system itself.

I am deeply disappointed by the actions taken by the teachers Rev. Kwarteng stated.

He accused headmasters and bursars of being primarily responsible for the underfeeding of students alleging a widespread practice of corruption.

Teachers should know that headmasters and bursars are responsible for the underfeeding of students in schools as they allegedly inflate food expenses and pocket part of the feeding money, he claimed.

He further alleged that these school administrators allegedly threaten matrons with transfers or put false charges on them to ensure their silence.

Given these hard facts, Rev. Kwarteng indicated that the 40% allocation to headmasters is not only fair but potentially too high. With this knowledge, the Minister was supposed to give the headmasters at least 5 percent he suggested.

To insist that the current 40 percent was too low shows that Hon. Iddrisu Haruna deserves praises and not a matter of threat the clergy noted.

On this note, the man of God issued a direct challenge to the members of the Association assigning them a “homework” before they proceed with any future action.

I challenge teachers to go out and make their own research and findings, he urged. Find out whether your headmasters are doing a good job to deserve the 40 percent feeding expenses allowance.

Concluding his remarks with a direct address to the Association, he reiterated his sentiment: I feel disappointed in you.
