The Council of State election at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council was abruptly halted after chaos erupted during the sorting and counting of ballots.
From a correspondent.
The disruption occurred when heavily built men, suspected to be thugs from an unknown location, stormed the grounds. They destroyed electoral materials, including ballot boxes and ballot papers, bringing the process to a standstill.
The situation escalated quickly, with journalists and electoral officers among those attacked.
Nana Peprah, a journalist with GhanaWeb, was among five members of the media who were severely assaulted. Sharing his account, Peprah stated that he was attacked while performing his duties as a journalist.
He explained that seven macho- men, suspecting he had video recordings of the disruption on his phone, ambushed him. They forcibly seized his phone and began slapping him. One of the attackers struck his mouth with an unknown object, causing a severe cut that bled profusely. Peprah’s shirt was stained with blood, and both his ID card and phone were confiscated.
“Look at my swollen mouth,” Nana Peprah recounted. “Someone hit me with an unknown object, and others slapped me from behind. I explained several times that I’m not a bad person or meant for any bad intentions, but they wouldn’t listen. They beat me severely, and at some point, I fell on the ground. In fact, my entire body is hurting me, including the injured mouth.” He intends to file a police report and seek medical attention.
Other journalists from Lawson TV, Angel FM, Oyerepa TV/FM, and Oseikrom Dawuro also reported being severely beaten during the disruption.
Though no arrest has since been made, it is however alleged that these thugs are from the NDC party. Police have since launched a manhunt for these criminals who invaded the election venue to cause this mayhem.
