Daddy Lumba took huge sums of money from Dr Mahamoud Bawumia for 2024 campaign songs but failed to deliver -says former Minister

A surprising revelation has emerged following the passing of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba. Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has disclosed that the iconic musician received a significant payment from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 general elections to compose a winning campaign song for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, due to deteriorating health, Daddy Lumba was unable to fulfill his part of the agreement.

Speaking in an interview after the musician’s death, Okraku-Mantey stated that the deal between Dr. Bawumia and Daddy Lumba was reached in good faith, with the former Vice President going as far as paying more than the amount initially requested by the musician. “Even Dr. Bawumia gave him more than he asked for, but he never complained,” Okraku-Mantey revealed, adding that the Vice President showed grace and understanding throughout the unfortunate turn of events.

According to sources close to the NPP’s campaign team, the party was initially excited about bringing Daddy Lumba on board, given his previous successful campaign anthems that energized political bases and influenced public sentiment. However, as months passed and health complications worsened for the highlife legend, the project had to be abandoned.

Despite receiving full payment, Daddy Lumba’s inability to deliver the promised song was met with empathy rather than criticism. “Bawumia was very respectful and understanding.
He knew Lumba was unwell and never pushed or made it an issue,” said another insider familiar with the arrangement.

The revelation sheds light on the human side of political dealings, emphasizing compassion over contracts in a situation where health eclipsed ambition. It also adds a nuanced chapter to Daddy Lumba’s legacy, marking the respect he commanded even at a time when he couldn’t meet his commitments.

Fans and political observers have praised the former Vice President’s calm demeanor regarding the matter, describing it as a rare show of maturity and integrity in Ghana’s highly charged political landscape.
