Dr. Bawumia: Ethnicity was not part of Npp’s 2024 defeat

Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate hopeful of the opposition New Patriotic Party has refuted claims that ethnicity played a major part in the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Abetifi Member of Parliament (MP) and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 electoral defeat to what he described as the tribal dynamics surrounding the candidature of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking to party members on Saturday, August 23, the former Minister for Agriculture said the party’s choice of flagbearer alienated sections of the electorate in northern Ghana.

He argued that this tribal divide contributed to the NPP’s losses across the northern belt, including the Oti, Upper East, Upper West, and Northern Regions. He pointed out that the party’s poor performance in Bawku is due to the fact that Bawumia is a Mamprusi.

Reacting to the statement, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia insisted that the Bawku area has traditionally been a stronghold of the ruling National Democratic Congress since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

He emphasised that out of the 11 elections held in the Bawku area since 1965, the UP/NPP tradition has had zero (0) seats in 6 out of the 11 elections.

He added that the NPP had 0 seats on 5 occasions when the party’s candidate was not a Mamprusi.

The Former Vice President stressed that the Bawku zone is not the party’s stronghold, adding that the 2024 performance had nothing to do with the fact that he is a Mamprusi.

He further noted that in any case, in 2024, the NPP lost just 30k votes there from the previous election and that is insignificant on the National percentage the party got.
