Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante, the
Former chairman of Peace Council has urged political leaders to promote and preach peace ahead of the December 2024 general elections.
According to him, the politicians with their aligned political parties has a role to play in nation-building and maintaining the peace and stability of the country.
Speaking at this year’s 3-Day Conference organized by St Georgina Healthcare Consultancy in the Ashanti Region ,the Former Chairman of Peace Council , Rev Asante, charged political leaders to desist from using unsavoury comments with the potential to incite electoral violence.
“Elections are not about violence, but about exercising your political right to choose a leader. We go to the polls to select a refined leader to lead our country, and it’s crucial we do so peacefully.”
He urged political leaders to harness their platforms to encourage cohesion among members of their political parties.
“All politicians in the country will understand that we have a responsibility to protect the peace, stability, and unity of our country and that whatever we do in this country, we must ensure that we maintain the peace, stability, and cohesion of our country.
“Let’s avoid insults, cutting down people, and those things that reduce people to nothing, and ensure that at the end of all these elections, Ghana will be peaceful and intact. Be careful what you say, how you say it, and the environment in which those things are said,” Rev. Asante stated.
He admonished Ghanaians to prioritize peace before, during, and after elections, shunning activities that breed violence.
“The power rests with the people, who are courted by political parties for their votes. Losing an election shouldn’t lead to conflict, as the ultimate goal is the country’s development and job creation. Ghana’s unity is paramount, and political leaders should promote their policies and vision, rather than spreading harmful comments that foster war”. He stressed.
