Ghanaians don’t want to see your third term in office -Kwesi Pratt Jnr boldly tells Mahama

Veteran Ghanaian journalist and seasoned political commentator, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has sparked national debate with a firm warning to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him not to entertain thoughts of seeking a third presidential term.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Pratt made it clear that any attempt to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution to permit a third term for Mahama would be both “unnecessary and wrong.”

“I have known President John Dramani Mahama for a very long time as a friend and a comrade, and I can swear that he is not a Bokosa,” Pratt said in his post, referencing former Central African Republic dictator Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who notoriously clung to power through authoritarian means.

According to Pratt, he believes Mahama respects the Constitution and is committed to democratic principles. “The Mahama I know is not interested in dictatorship or breaking constitutional order,” he added.

This comes amid growing murmurs within certain political circles about revisiting constitutional term limits, a move that would allow Mahama—who served as President from 2012 to 2017 and is currently the opposition NDC’s flagbearer—to possibly contest for an unprecedented third term in the future.

Pratt was unequivocal in his disapproval of such proposals. “I urge all the many village chiefs and charlatans who are busily proposing that the 1992 Constitution should be amended to allow President Mahama to run for a third term, not to waste their time,” he stated.

He further emphasized that Ghana is not bereft of leadership talent and must not be perceived as a nation dependent on a single individual. “A country of over 32 million people cannot be reduced to having only one person who is fit to lead,” Pratt noted. “If there were such a country, it would not be worth a sensible person’s leadership.
