The Kumasi Sofoline Super branch chairman of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Albert Kwasi Boama, has issued a strong warning to drivers operating within the Sofoline Highway.
Concerned about the alarming rise in road accidents particularly pedestrians and school children’s knockdowns, Boama has pledged the union’s full support for police efforts to arrest and prosecute drivers who violate road traffic regulations.
Speaking during a special joint exercise at Sofoline, which included representatives from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the police, city guards, and drivers, Boama highlighted the severity of the situation.
He said road accident cases at Sofoline are alarming, with knockdowns of pedestrians occurring daily.
He attributed the problem to not only the traffic congestion and the absence of traffic lights but also to careless driving.
He reiterated that the ongoing operation is aimed at creating awareness amongst drivers, urging them to prioritize their work and pay close attention while navigating the Sofoline Highway.
However, Boama’s message was clear and uncompromising. He warned drivers that they would be held accountable for their actions.
I would like to warn that no chairman from any of the transport unions at the Sofoline will sympathize or come to your aid when the police arrest and prosecute you over negligence or careless driving, he declared.
This underscores a firm stance against unprofessional conduct and a commitment to prioritizing road safety.
The message from the GPRTU chairman is clear: drivers must adhere to the ethics of their profession and abide by traffic laws. Any driver found guilty of offenses will face the full force of the law, with no intervention or support from the union.
Boama implored drivers to be law-abiding and maintain a responsible attitude behind the wheel.
This, he emphasized, is crucial to avoid accidents, prevent prosecution, and contribute to a more peaceful and safer Sofoline.
The Kumasi Suame Police Command confirmed that the ongoing exercise is intended to be a sustained effort to curb reckless driving and ensure a safer environment for all road users
The warning from the GPRTU, coupled with the police’s commitment to enforcement, signals a strong message that negligence and disregard for traffic regulations will not be tolerated. Drivers are urged to take heed and prioritize safety to avoid legal repercussions and contribute to a safer road environment.
