In a heartfelt appeal, a dedicated nurse at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, who prefers to remain incognito, has voiced urgent concerns about the alarming rate of patient mortality in Ghana’s hospitals.
The nurse highlights the dire consequences of inadequate healthcare facilities, including critical shortages of essential drugs, surgical equipment, and other necessary resources that are vital for proper patient care.
The plea from this healthcare professional encapsulates a growing concern within Ghana’s healthcare system. According to the nurse, the lack of adequate hospital facilities is not just a logistical issue; it profoundly impacts patient outcomes.
“Many patients are dying daily in our hospitals due to the absence of drugs and other critical materials,” she lamented. “These challenges are pushing families to the brink of despair, and it is disheartening to witness their suffering when the solutions to alleviate their pain are within reach.”
The nurse pointed out that while stakeholders often engage in discussions, policies, and rhetoric that create the illusion of an adequately functioning healthcare system, the reality is starkly different.
The persistent challenges, including equipment failure, insufficient staffing, and the unavailability of basic supplies, paint a picture of systemic strife.
Instead of confronting these issues head-on, the government often resorts to reassurances and promises that fail to materialize into tangible improvements.
In her anonymous testimony, she underscored the urgent need for the government to take swift action in addressing these shortcomings. “Patients do not deserve to suffer or die waiting for basic treatments,” she argued. “We, the healthcare workers, are fighting on the front lines, but we cannot win this battle alone.
We need the government’s support to improve our facilities, procure necessary drugs, and equip our hospitals adequately for us to provide the level of care that every citizen deserves.”
The nurse’s comments echo a broader concern shared by many in the healthcare profession. The ongoing challenges faced by hospitals must serve as a wake-up call for the government and relevant authorities.
