Dr. Kwame Agyemang Budu former boss of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has called for urgent and pragmatic measures to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector while also urging political actors to promote unity and decorum as the nation prepares for future elections.
Dr. Budu noted that a major challenges confronting the power distribution system in Ghana is the continued use of obsolete equipment and aging cables across several parts of the country.
According to him, these outdated installations contribute significantly to power losses, frequent outages and inefficiencies within the system.

He therefore emphasized the need for immediate replacement and modernization of such infrastructure to enhance reliable electricity supply.
He further stressed that funds generated through the Energy Sector Levy* must be utilized judiciously and transparently to address critical challenges within the sector. In his view, the levy was introduced to support the stabilization of the energy sector, and its effective management is essential for strengthening Ghana’s power delivery system.
Dr. Budu also called on electricity consumers to demonstrate honesty and responsibility in the payment of their electricity bills.
He explained that revenue collection remains a vital component in sustaining operations, maintaining infrastructure, and ensuring continuous power supply across the country.
Additionally he highlighted the importance of proper boundary allocations within the electricity distribution system.
Such demarcations, he explained, help authorities clearly identify and monitor power supply levels in each region,* thereby improving planning, accountability, and service delivery.
Touching on the issue of energy deficits, Dr. Budu acknowledged* that the sector continues to face *high deficits due to technical losses, unpaid bills and aging infrastructure.
He therefore recommended the replacement of old and faulty electricity meters to enhance accurate billing and reduce commercial losses.
Beyond the energy sector, Dr. Budu also addressed the need for political maturity and unity, particularly at the time where Ghanaians need economic freedom.
He cautioned against *internal wrangling, emphasizing that such divisions weaken political organizations and undermine their chances of electoral success.
He stated that no political party can wrestle power in the 2028 general elections without the collective support and cooperation of all its aspirants and members.
According to him, unity remains the most important ingredient for political victory.
Dr. Budu further emphasized the importance of floating voters, describing them as a key determinant in the outcome of the 2028 elections.
He urge political actors to adopt issue-based campaigns that appeal to the broader Ghanaian electorates devoid of hostility to enhance democracyinthecountry.
