Interior Mlnlster explains why military personnel have been withdrawn from Jean Mensah’s residence

Interior Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed that, military personnel who were body guards for Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah has been withdrawn.

In an interview on JoyNews midday news, the interior explained that, the decision to withdraw the military security detail for the EC Chair is based on a new policy not use military personnel as personal body guards for civilians.

He indicated that, the EC Chair still has police protection despite the withdrawal of military personnel as body guards at her residence.

The Interior Minister is of the view that, the use of military personnel as body guards for civilians sends a wrong perception as the duty of the military is protect the territorial borders of the Country, whiles the police is to protect citizens and maintain law and order.

He further added that, using military personnel as protection sometimes reduce the numbers of military who are needed to perform other important duties.

His comments comes in the wake of reports that, the security detail of Mrs. Jean Mensah has been withdrawn by the Mahama led administration.

In the erstwhile administration, the EC boss was protected by military personnel rather than police officers as it is now.

The decision to use military personnel to protect the EC Chair in the erstwhile administration was creticised by some Ghanaians, including the then opposition NDC.
