Journalist’s Urgent Call On President Mahama’ To Save GAMA/GKMA Sanitation Projects From Collapse

By King Amoah, Kumasi

In his quest to ensure that the Ghana government saves the Ministry of Sanitation, Environment and Water Resources’ Greater Kumasi Metropolitan and Geater Accra Metropolitan Assemblies (GKMA/GAMA’s) sanitation projects from collapse, a Kumasi-bssed veteran journalist Mr King Amoah has called on His Excellency President John Dreamani Mahama to intervene and help reactivate and fund the projects for the benefit of the country.

In his call through an open letter to the President dated July 31 2025, and copied to the Country Director of the World Bank, King Amoah highlighted the positive impact that GAMA/GKMA Sanitation Projects have made since the projects took off in 2014 under the then Ndc administration.

The open letter stated that the National Democratic Congress (Ndc) initiated the projects in 2014 with the World Bank financial support.

He said as of 2024 the Ministry had completed over 30,000 ultra modern bio-digester toilet facilities for households in Accra and Kumasi besides others in schools.

As at press time sources close to the Ministry of Sanitation Environment and Water Resources confirmed that GAMA/GKMA sanitation projects under the Ministry of Sanitation Environment and Water Resources has been temporary suspended due to financial challenges.

The sources hinted that the Ministry is looking forward for financial bail out before the project could be started.

We publish below the unedited open letter from the Journalist to H/E, President John Dreamani Mahama.Your Excellency,

Subject: Urgent Call to Prioritize and Reactivate the GAMA/GKMA Sanitation and Environmental Projects

I write to you in my capacity as an Environmental Journalist, committed to contribute my part towards national development with a primary focus on addressing critical public health challenges facing the nation.

Your Excellency it is widely known that until recently the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources was actively overseeing the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Sanitation, Environment and Water Projects.

These projects which are the initiative of the NDC government in 2014 and sponsored by the World Bank, had as of December 2024 facilitated the completion of over 30,000 household bio-digester toilet facilities across households in Kumasi and over 46,000 household toilets schools in Accra.

Over 600 schools and health care facilities within Accra and Kumsi have also benefited from access to improved institutional sanitation facilities.

Through these initiatives significant strides were made in addressing open defecation, while also ensuring that a substantial number of households and schools gained access to affordable toilet facilities.

The GAMA/GKMA Sanitation, Environment, and Water Projects have been commended even at the international level and were lauded as a commendable initiative from which many more Ghanaians hoped to benefit.

Your Excellency, as an investigative journalist my findings reveal that these vital projects are currently stalled with contractors having ceased operations due to significant financial challenges.

Further investigations indicate that due to the immense health importance attached to these projects, many Ghanaians across the nation including areas beyond Accra and Kumasi are still eagerly awaiting to access to these crucial sanitation facilities.

Your Excellency in line with the Global Sustainable Development Goals sanitation and environmental protection are deeply prioritized, as economic development is inherently stalled without a healthy populace.

I recognize and commend the commendable policies your administration have outlined to ‘Reset Ghana.

I strongly believe that the vision of the Reset Ghana Agenda can only be fully realized when fundamental issues such as sanitation and environment are given the highest priority.

Therefore, this open letter serves as an urgent wake-up call for Your Excellency to intervene decisively in the dormant operations confronting the Ministry’s GAMA/GKMA Sanitation Projects.

Thereby enabling them to become active and work effectively for the citizens of Ghana.

Having commended significant progress from your government’s policies, I trust that immediate attention will be focused on the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to reactivate these crucial sanitation projects for the benefit of the entire country.

Yours sincerely,

Signed…….

King Amoah
