Kma Task Force nets 22 drivers defying fare reduction orders

In a crackdown on non-compliant drivers, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Task Force has apprehended 22 drivers for violating the Assembly’s mandated 15% fare reduction order within the metropolis.

The Task Force, consisting of KMA Guards, the Department of Transport, and Security Operatives, conducted a special operation after receiving numerous reports of drivers ignoring the directive, which came into effect on May 24, 2025.

Despite ample prior notice and public announcements, many drivers continued to charge passengers the old fares, leading to disputes and frustration among drivers and passengers.

Faced with mounting complaints and persistent disregard for the regulations, the KMA initiated the operation to enforce compliance.

Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of Urban Roads, lauded the efforts of the Task Force, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to protecting commuters from unfair practices.

He stated that drivers found in violation of the fare reduction order would face fines ranging from Ghc 500 to Ghc 1500, depending on the severity of the offense. Only after paying the fine would their vehicles be released, Randy Wilson told journalists.

We gave them sufficient time to adjust and comply with the new directives, Mr. Wilson explained. However, some drivers chose to disregard the regulations, leaving us with no option but to enforce the law.

As of press time, some of the apprehended drivers had already paid their fines and retrieved their vehicles. However, others were reportedly delaying compliance.

Mr. Wilson made it clear that the KMA would continue the operation until full compliance is achieved to ensure that passengers are no longer subjected to inflated fares.

The KMA is dedicated to ensuring fairness and transparency in public transportation,Wilson hinted. We will continue these operations until it is clear that drivers have fully complied with the fare reduction order, allowing passengers to travel without being exploited, Wilson concluded.
