Kumasi businessman urges government to prioritize agriculture for economic growth

A prominent Kumasi businessman, Alhaji Abubakari Musah, Managing Director of Basfam Company Ltd, is calling on the government to prioritize the agricultural sector as a key driver for economic growth in Ghana.

He believes that focused investment in agriculture can significantly boost job creation, enhance food production, and increase revenue mobilization for the state.

Alhaji Abubakari emphasized that agriculture is the backbone of every nation, and neglecting it will undoubtedly hinder overall development.

His remarks come amidst public discussions regarding food security and economic progress in the country.

Addressing criticisms targeting the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama, Alhaji Abubakari urged patience and support.

He highlighted that the President was still in the early stages of his term and deserved time to implement his policies effectively.

Beyond defending the President, Alhaji Abubakari, who also serves as the Chairman of the Muslims Executive Foundation (MEF), passionately advocated for the potential of agriculture, particularly farming, as a lucrative career path.

He stressed the need for government to actively encourage farmers, especially the youth to maximize their potential.

With proper support, we will see more jobs created, food production will increase, and we could even export food to generate funds to support the economy, Alhaji Abubakari asserted.

He specifically identified crucial areas of support for farmers, including access to modern farming equipment such as tractors and harvesters, fertilizers, chemicals, and financial assistance.

He believes that prioritizing these needs would significantly alleviate the country’s food challenges.

Addressing concerns regarding imported rice, Alhaji Abubakari raised the issue of the overwhelming presence of foreign rice in the market, which he believes is undermining local rice production and discouraging Ghanaian farmers.

He described locally produced rice as nutritious, fresh, and free from harmful additives. He urged the government to curb the importation of foreign rice, expressing concerns that some imported varieties might be expired and pose a health risk to Ghanaian consumers.

Alhaji Abubakari Musah firmly believes that if his recommendations are heeded and implemented effectively, Ghana can unlock significant potential for job creation, ensure food security, and generate vital revenue to fuel national development.

He urged the government to take his suggestions in good faith and work towards prioritizing agriculture as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic future.
