Let’s rise up to our mandate and advocate for a violence free electoral process – Journalist.

As the countdown to the December 7 elections intensifies, the call for a peaceful electoral process has never been more urgent. In the bustling city of Kumasi, freelance journalist Nana Arko has emphasized the critical role of the media and civil society in fostering an environment conducive to democracy.

In a brief interview Arko challenged his colleagues to rise to their mandate without fear or favor and to speak the hard truth to the chairperson of the Electoral Commission regarding the body’s responsibilities in ensuring free and fair elections.

According to him in any democracy, a courageous media landscape serves as a cornerstone of electoral integrity.

Journalists have the power to hold institutions accountable and ensure that the public is informed about electoral processes.

Nana Arko’s admonishment highlights the imperative for journalists to illuminate the truth, particularly during a period fraught with tension and potential violence.

“Let’s not shy away from our responsibility,” Arko stated firmly.

“We must voice our concerns directly to the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, urging them to implement measures that prevent electoral violence. It is not just our right; it is our duty.”

He reiterated that the Electoral Commission holds a significant position in the electoral process. It is tasked with overseeing and managing elections, ensuring transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles.

Arko stressed that in the lead-up to the December polls, the Commission must prioritize initiatives that promote peace and build public trust.

Arko stressed the need for the Commission to engage in proactive planning insisting that this should include deploying adequate security measures, providing voter education, and facilitating dialogue among political parties to mitigate potential tensions.

He underscored that the chairperson’s leadership will be instrumental in setting a tone of cooperation and respect during the election period

With political tensions running high and a history of electoral violence, the challenges ahead are formidable.

It is crucial for all stakeholders the media, political parties, civil society, and the Electoral Commission to come together in a concerted effort to ensure the elections are peaceful and orderly.

As journalists, our focus should not solely be on reporting the events of the elections but also on shaping the narrative that will drive a violence-free outcome.

As the dates draw closer, the responsibility falls on each of us to rise to the occasion. The path to a violence-free election on December 7 requires collective commitment, unwavering vigilance, and the courage to speak the truth.

By advocating for accountability and transparency, we can help to ensure that the upcoming elections reflect the will of the people—a will shaped by peaceful participation and respect for democratic norms.

Let us rise up to our mandate, confront the challenges, and work towards a future where every vote counts and every voice is heard without fear or favor, Nana Arko concluded.
