The Kumasi Kajeitia (Mosque) branch Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Musa Carlos, has issued a stark warning to President John Dramani Mahama, stating his intention to organize mass demonstrations if significant economic transformation is not evident within a year.
In an exclusive interview with Yen.com, Chairman Carlos emphasized that his call serves as a crucial wake-up call for the President and his cabinet.
He urged the president and his team to prioritize the campaign promises that resonated with Ghanaians and ultimately secured President Mahama’s victory in the quest for change.
Musa Carlos specifically pointed to the President’s pledge to eradicate “galamsey” (illegal mining) activities within his first 120 days in office.
He lamented that with the deadline nearing “100 days,” the problem persists, even escalating, suggesting a failure in meeting this critical promise.
Beyond galamsey, Chairman Carlos expressed concern over the perceived lack of progress in the fight against corruption. He criticized the “Operation Retrieve All Loot” ( ORAL) exercise, calling it controversial and highlighting the opposition NPP’s claims that its implementation is unlawful and unconstitutional.
Furthermore, Carlos who is a businessman dealing in mobile phones, highlighted the delayed appointment of District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Chief Executives, arguing that this absence hinders the progress of local assembly policies aimed at socio-economic development.
āIām a staunch member of the NDC, yet when it comes to the issues that border on the welfare of Ghanaians, I have the right to voice my views, apparently to alert government on what is lacking in the country,ā Musa stated.
He insisted that the days of political leaders relying on propaganda and empty promises to the detriment of the citizenry are over. He hopes his public call will spur the President to action and ensure the fulfillment of promised mandates, particularly in the fight against corruption, to deter potential wrongdoers and improve living standards.
However, not everyone within the NDC shares Carlos’s sentiment. Mr. Issah Moro, the Kumasi Kwadaso Constituency Chairman of the NDC, countered that it is premature to criticize the President for failing to deliver on campaign promises within such a short timeframe.
He argued that no president can magically transform an economy in “100 days” despite pre-election pledges. Chairman Issah Moro urged Ghanaians to exercise patience and rally behind the President to realize his agenda for the people.
Meanwhile, Eric Nana Arko, an activist of the NPP within the Kwabre East Constituency in the Ashanti region, observed that all eyes are on President John Dramani Mahama.
He acknowledged the high expectations Ghanaians have for the President to fulfill his election promises and warned that demonstrations, as anticipated by the Kajeitia Mosque branch Chairman of NDC, could become a reality if progress is not made in strengthening the economy.
This division highlights the pressure mounting on President Mahama to deliver on his promises and demonstrate tangible progress in addressing the country’s challenges, with the threat of public demonstrations looming if expectations are not met.
