Former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, together with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were turned away on Thursday when they attempted to visit embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra.
Chairman Wontumi, who was earlier picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), is now in NIB custody as investigations continue into allegations surrounding his conduct.
Speaking to the press, Dr. Bawumia explained that although arrangements had been made ahead of their visit, officials informed them that Wontumi could not be brought out due to the size of the crowd.
“We heard that Wontumi was arrested and has been held in custody by EOCO and so we wanted to see him and see how he was doing. We have made those arrangements,” Bawumia said.
“Unfortunately, we are here, but the NIB and EOCO feel that the crowd is such that they are unable to bring him here at the moment and that they would have to make proper arrangement to bring him so that we can see him.”
Visibly unhappy about the situation, Bawumia expressed his disappointment over the failed visit, emphasizing that it was a pre-arranged engagement.
“We are very disappointed in our inability to see him because we had made prior arrangement and so we have expressed our disappointment and we want to continue and make sure that we can see him.”
