Accprding to a report by Yen.com.gh, Kennedy Agyapong, a well-known politician and businessman, has shared his thoughts on the future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after the 2024 elections. Speaking recently, he made strong comments about how long it would take for the party to return to power if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia continues as its flagbearer. His words have sparked new discussions within the party and among Ghanaians who follow political affairs closely.
According to Agyapong, the NPP might face a very long time in opposition if they do not take a hard look at their leadership choices. He said the people of Ghana are already tired and disappointed with how things were handled under the last government. He warned that if the party does not listen to the concerns of the public, they could remain out of power for more than twenty years.
On September 8, 2025, his statement drew attention because of the way he directly linked Dr Bawumia’s leadership to the party’s chances of returning to government.
Kennedy Agyapong explained that leadership is not just about choosing someone who is popular inside the party but about connecting with ordinary citizens. He argued that Ghanaians want leaders who can fix their daily struggles, create jobs, and improve the economy. He said without these changes, the people would not easily forgive or forget the hardship they faced. His message was that if the NPP does not reform, they should prepare to stay in opposition for many years.
The comments also revealed Agyapong’s deep frustration with the way decisions were made during the last
administration. He said that when leaders make mistakes, it is always the people who suffer, and when the people suffer, they punish the party at the polls. He reminded the NPP that 2024 should have been a lesson, but if no lesson is learned, then the future will be even more difficult for them.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who was Vice President before 2025, has remained the party’s main figure and continues to enjoy support among NPP members. But critics like Agyapong believe that his role in the last government makes it hard for many Ghanaians to trust him again. The debate continues, but Agyapong’s warning has given both supporters and critics of the NPP something serious to think about as they look ahead to the coming years.
