Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has counseled Ghanaians to exercise restraint and patience in their demands for immediate prosecutions following the submission of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) report to the President.
Domelevo emphasized that the primary objective of the report was to gather information, highlighting the necessity of adhering to due process before initiating any legal action.
According to Domelevo, a comprehensive examination of the legal and financial implications is crucial before proceeding with prosecutions or arrests.
He revealed that he has engaged in discussions with the Attorney General, and they share a similar perspective on the matter. Domelevo noted that the Attorney General believes they may need to rely more heavily on the audit, sparking questions about the timeline for prosecutions or arrests.
Domelevo cautioned against rushing the process, emphasizing the importance of affording the Attorney General and Auditor-General sufficient time to review the cases.
He explained that the Auditor-General can conduct a value-for-money audit and compliance audit to assess whether the individuals in question comply with laws and regulations. Domelevo stated, “I think it is premature… People should understand that all we did was to gather information. We have not even heard from the other side.”
He further underscored the importance of adopting a meticulous approach to ensuring accountability and recovering misappropriated public funds, while upholding legal procedures.
Domelevo’s remarks highlight the need for patience and restraint in the pursuit of justice, emphasizing the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold without undue haste or pressure.
