In a passionate plea for environmental stewardship, Alhaji Musah Abubakari, the Managing Director of Basfam Company Limited in Kumasi, has voiced his deep concerns regarding the alarming levels of environmental pollution in the city.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Alhaji Abubakari emphasized the pressing need for individuals and communities to acknowledge the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
“People seem to be turning a blind eye to the environmental degradation happening around them, as if it’s just a mundane part of life like having breakfast tea,” he lamented. His observations are rooted in meticulous investigations that reveal Kumasi is heavily affected by the improper disposal of waste, particularly single-use plastic sachets that once contained water.
These discarded materials not only tarnish the beauty of the city but also pose significant health risks to its residents.
Alhaji Abubakari pointed out that the accumulation of waste is more than just an aesthetic issue; it has direct implications for public health. “These empty sachets contribute to the clogging of gutters, leading to stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. This, in turn, results in increased cases of diseases such as malaria, creating a cycle that affects the community at large,” he explained.
During the interview, Abubakari displayed the very waste he collected from streets and school parks, underscoring his commitment to restoring the environment. He urged Ghanaians to shift their mindset towards waste disposal, advocating for specific actions individuals can take to help combat the pollution crisis.
“It is essential to dispose of waste materials especially empty sachet water rubbers in public bins rather than littering the environment. Alternatively, these materials can be collected and sold to recycling companies, providing a source of income for those in need.”
As the Chairman of the Muslims Executive Foundation (MEF), Alhaji Musah Abubakari calls upon the government and other stakeholders to take decisive action to address the growing environmental issues. He warns that without intervention, the country could one day be overtaken by a sudden health crisis linked to environmental neglect.
“The responsibility to protect our environment rests on all of us,” he remarked. “It is vital for our well-being and the sustainability of our communities. We need to act before it’s too late, or we might face unforeseen pandemics that could have been prevented with proper environmental management.”
