Queenmothers urged to take active roles in discouraging teenage pregnancy.

In a heartfelt appeal, Juliet Oforiwa, a Kumasi-based midwife, has called upon Queen Mothers across Ghana to step into the forefront in the fight against teenage pregnancy.

Speaking to the correspondent in an interview, Oforiwa believes that these influential women, who hold esteemed positions in their communities can significantly impact public health and social norms by actively promoting responsible behavior among the youth.

Oforiwaa related that Queen Mothers, been traditional leaders are revered for their wisdom and maternal role in society, have a unique platform that allows them to address critical issues affecting the community.

Their deep-rooted connection with the people and their status as role models render them powerful figures capable of effecting change.

Oforiwa emphasizes that it is essential for these leaders to embrace their potential and leverage their influence to guide young people toward making better life choices.

According to her teenage pregnancy remains a pressing issue in many parts of Ghana, with alarming statistics reflecting its prevalence.

She said many adolescents lack the necessary information and resources to make informed decisions about their sexuality, leading to unintended pregnancies that can derail their futures.

The consequences, both social and economic, she went on,can be profound, affecting not just the young mothers but also their families and communities.

Oforiwa pointed out that teenage pregnancy often results from a complex mix of factors, including lack of parental guidance, inadequate sexual education, and societal pressures.

She intimated that In rural and underserved communities, the problem is exacerbated by limited access to healthcare facilities and educational resources.

Against this backdrop, the role of queenmothers becomes even more critical.

To address the issue, Oforiwa suggests that Queen Mothers need to actively engage in advocacy and education initiatives directed toward young people.

This can include organizing workshops, seminars, and discussion forums that focus on sexual health, responsible behavior, and the importance of education.

By fostering open communication between parents, guardians, and their children, Queen Mothers can create a supportive environment where young people would feel comfortable, discussing these topics, Oforiwaa insisted.
