A Wontumi Radio and TV broadcaster, Gordon Asare Bediako, has confirmed that presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare is currently being held at the Police Headquarters in Accra after his arrest in Ejisu Krapa, Ashanti Region.
According to Bediako, unidentified armed men wearing hoodies, believed to be national security operatives, picked up the journalist while he was with friends on Tuesday, August 12, in what eyewitnesses described as a dramatic operation.
The detention comes in the wake of the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) suspension of nine radio stations nationwide, including three owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Wontumi.
The NCA cited breaches such as operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance, using unauthorised STL frequencies, and running unapproved transmitter sites, in violation of broadcasting regulations.
Bediako said his detained colleague has been threatened with court action but noted that the charges are still unknown.
He criticised the security services for taking a statement from the presenter without legal representation, describing the situation as worrying for press freedom and due process.
