Scrap covid-19 levy: A private medical doctor’s perspective.

By King Amoah

Kumasi, Ghana – In a bold statement, Dr. Fred Opuni, a private medical doctor based in Kumasi, has called for the immediate abolition of the COVID-19 levy imposed in the country.

In an interview with the media he argues that the levy lacks justification and, in the wake of the pandemic’s end, attempting to collect such funds may be seen as fraudulent.

Dr. Opuni’s critique comes amidst ongoing health challenges faced by the nation, where citizens continue to struggle with the accessibility and affordability of medical treatment.

He asserts that after the pandemic, it is essential to question who has held accountability for the millions of dollars in external assistance that Ghana received.

The absence of a comprehensive report detailing the use of these funds raises concerns about transparency and the government’s commitment to health improvements.

“The pandemic may be behind us, but the impact on our health system is still felt severely,” Dr. Opuni stated. He emphasized that the COVID-19 levy was initially justified as a means to bolster the health infrastructure during an unprecedented global crisis.

However, as the situation has evolved, he believes that the rationale for continuing this levy has dissipated.

Dr. Opuni further highlighted the disconnect between the levy and the tangible improvements in Ghana’s healthcare system.

“We do not see the impact of the COVID-19 levy in terms of enhancing drug availability or providing essential medical services in our hospitals. Levying citizens in the name of health matters while they continue to suffer can only be seen as a fraudulent game plan,” he concluded.

Patients and healthcare workers alike have echoed Dr. Opuni’s sentiments, expressing frustration at the current state of the health system.

Many have reported difficulties in obtaining necessary medications and treatments, leading to growing discontent among citizens who feel that they are bearing the financial burden without seeing the promised benefits.

Critics of the levy have called for greater transparency and accountability from the authorities regarding COVID-19 funding.

The consistent demand for answers underscores a crucial aspect of governance: citizens deserve to know how public funds are being utilized, especially when it pertains to their health and wellbeing.
