Teacher Licensure Integration Will Liberate Trainees: We Will Remind John Mahama – William Boadi.

The former President and NDC flag bearer, H. E. John Dramani Mahama, recently made a significant promise during the NDC’s 2024 manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba. John Mahama outlined 30 educational policies, but we have singled out the pledge to abolish the current teacher licensure examination and integrate the licensing process into the final year examinations of teacher trainees. This proposal, long advocated by the Educate Africa Institute (EAI), aims to address the challenges faced by trainees under the existing system, where many have successfully passed the licensure exams but remain unemployed due to administrative bottlenecks.

Since its introduction in 2018, the teacher licensure examination has been criticized for its flawed implementation, despite its intention to ensure only qualified teachers enter the classroom. The current system has left many graduates in a state of uncertainty, with their talents wasted and students deprived of quality education. Integrating the licensing process into final year exams, as proposed by Mahama and supported by EAI, would streamline the transition from education to employment, ensuring that trainees are adequately prepared and supported within their college curriculum.

John Mahama’s commitment to reform the licensure process must move beyond political rhetoric to real, actionable change should he win the election. The EAI and the teaching community will hold the next administration accountable to ensure this policy is implemented, thereby creating a system that truly supports the future of education in Ghana.

We’re one people. Ghana first.
