Technology: Why you should not sleep with phone near your head

From Rose Winny, Our US Correspondent.

Many people place their phones under their pillow or beside them on the bed while sleeping. While it may seem harmless or even convenient, sleeping with your phone close to your head can have negative effects on your health and quality of rest.

Here’s why you should keep your phone at a safe distance while you sleep:

1. Disrupts Sleep Quality

Phones emit blue light, which interferes with melatonin — the hormone that regulates sleep. This can lead to difficulty falling asleep or poor sleep quality.

2. Increases Exposure to Radiation

Mobile phones emit low levels of non-ionizing radiation. While research is ongoing, experts recommend limiting direct, prolonged exposure to your head and body.

3. Risk of Overheating or Fire

There have been reports of phones overheating or even catching fire when left under pillows or bed covers while charging. This is a safety hazard.

4. Disturbs Mental Rest

Notifications, vibrations, and LED lights from your phone can disturb your sleep cycle, even if you don’t fully wake up. This leads to fatigue the next day.
5. Heightens Stress and Anxiety

Checking your phone late at night or first thing in the morning can increase stress, anxiety, and even depression especially from social media or news overload.

Safe Habits to Practice:

1. Keep your phone on “Do Not Disturb” or Airplane Mode at night.

3. Avoid screen time at least 30 minutes before sleep.

Protect your rest and your health by unplugging at night.
