The President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs at Mpasaatia in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti Region, Chief Abdulai Mohammed has commended the occupant of the Golden Stool Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his bold decision in which he has taken to discourage the activities of illegal mining in the Ashanti Region.
Readers can recalled that in somewhere last year 2022, Otumfuo openly expressed his worry about the rising trend in which galamsey operations have been destroying the country’s environment, especially in the Ashanti Region.
As a result he has taken measures to foil the operations to restore the lands to its fertility status.
To realize the agenda Asantehene has warned chiefs who give away lands to the illegal miners to refrain from the act or risk face his wrath.
With effect from this month January 2023, Otumfuo said he will sanction chiefs who would be found culpable in collaborating with the galamseyers who destroy the country’s arable lands.
But reacting to Otumfuo’s decision, Chief Abdulai Mohammed commended the King for the move.
He stressed that the agenda is the best alternative way that could end the fight against the illegal mining activities in the country.
To enhance Otumfuo’s decision, chief Abdulai Mohammed urged the traditional authorities to join Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in his quest to halt illegal mining in the country for the interest of all Ghanaians.
He said if Otumfuo’s agenda is fully embraced by the traditional authorities who are the custodians of the lands in the country, it will go a long way to address the mining menace positively to restore the country’s lands from total destruction.
