Torrential rains unleashed havoc on Sekondi Takoradi, leaving residents homeless and millions in losses

Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western region of Ghana is reeling from the aftermath of a devastating downpour that struck on Monday, June 16th, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing numerous residents.

A relentless, two-hour deluge transformed streets into rivers submerging homes, offices, and marketplaces, and causing widespread damage estimated to be worth millions of cedis.

The torrential rains swept away electric appliances, household items, clothing, and other personal belongings, leaving many families with nothing.

Undisclosed sums of money were also lost in the deluge.

Government properties were not spared, with a $200 million Astro Turf project at Effiankwanta particularly hard hit.

Residents described the flooded field as a swimming pool, with some even resorting to bathing in the accumulated water highlighting the desperation and displacement caused by the disaster.

Areas significantly impacted by the flooding include Takoradi Polytechnic, Ketan, Shama, Sekondi, Effiankwanta, partial sections of the Takoradi Harbor, and the Central Market

Reports of roofs being ripped off buildings were also rampant throughout the affected areas.

The scale of the devastation is immense, leaving many residents homeless and facing an uncertain future.

The impact extends beyond personal losses with significant economic consequences for businesses and the region as a whole.

In the wake of the disaster, relevant authorities including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), are on the ground assessing the extent of the damage.

This critical first step will inform the necessary actions to provide relief, support displaced residents and begin the long process of recovery.
