True heroes never fade, and Yaw Sarpong’s influence as a gospel musician will be remembered long after his passing. His journey from humble roots to national acclaim reflects his extraordinary talent, resilience, and unshakeable faith.
Born on February 4, 1963, in Accra, Yaw Sarpong was the son of Hon. Ernest Moses Opoku, a CPP parliamentarian for Atwima Nwabiagya. After the 1966 coup, his father was imprisoned and died shortly after, forcing the family to relocate to Tonto Kokoben in the Atwima Nwabiagya District, where Yaw grew up.
Yaw’s musical aptitude emerged early. He joined the Methodist singing group in Asuofua and was discovered in 1971 by a doctor establishing a music ensemble. During a performance in Asuase, Kumasi, a pastor recognized his promise and became his mentor. Later, Professor Kofi Abraham encouraged him further, performing his first composition, “Ma te nka se Ohene bi de Yesu”, which launched a career spanning over 26 albums.
He contributed to Kristo Asafo in Accra New Town, joined the Ahensan band under Wofa Asumani, and eventually moved to Accra to work as a taxi driver for three years. In 1986, Yaw relocated to Liberia to form the Asomafo group with members from Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. His debut album, “Adesrede”, had been released five years earlier.
Yaw’s impact on gospel music has earned him several accolades. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in Sacred Music from the Ecclesiastical Bishop Leaders Conference of Africa, and in 2019, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ghana Music Awards in London. His social initiatives, including The Prison Project, highlight his dedication to community service.
