Npp’s early flagbearer election plans unconstitutional -says Lawyer Appiah Kubi

A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi, has publicly denounced the proposed plan to elect a presidential candidate ahead of other party elections for the 2028 general elections.

Kubi made his comments during his appearance on a Kumasi-based Agyenkwa FM on Monday, June 23rd characterizing the move as unconstitutional.

Andy Appiah Kubi emphatically stated that the NPP’s constitution does not mandate prioritizing the presidential candidate selection process over parliamentary and grassroots positions.

No part of our constitution says a presidential candidate should first be chosen before parliamentary elections among other grassroots positions, he told listeners.

Acknowledging that the suggestion has been made by the executive members of the party Kubi emphasized that it is not a foregone conclusion.

He highlighted the potential challenges surrounding such a decision suggesting that its viability is questionable.

He further mentioned that a committee has been formed to deliberate on the proposed plan and assured that the findings of their work will be made public.

Beyond the constitutional concerns, the lawyer expressed deep concern about the growing factionalism and instances of disrespect exhibited by some office holders within the NPP.

He warned that such conduct could have a detrimental impact on the party’s prospects in the future elections.

Addressing NPP members directly, Kubi called for calm and end to public disputes. He stressed the importance of unity, stating that with unity the NPP would definitely resurrect to power in 2028.

His called for togetherness underlines the potential divisions that the early flagbearer election debate is exposing within the party and serves as a reminder of the critical role internal cohesion plays in securing electoral success.
