Unfolding drama hits Ashanti Npp as party youth chases Bryan Acheamong for declaring support for Bawumia

A dramatic scene unfolded in Kumasi on Monday after a group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth openly rejected Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong by chanting “Away! Away!” during a community engagement event. The confrontation erupted moments after the same youth group had declared their firm and unshakable support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The incident occurred at the Asokwa area where party supporters had gathered for what was expected to be a routine mobilization activity. However, the atmosphere quickly changed when the youth, many wearing T-shirts and bands bearing Dr. Bawumia’s image, took turns addressing the media and reaffirming their loyalty to the Vice President.

They argued that Dr. Bawumia represents the future of the party, citing his digital reforms and his role in modernizing the NPP’s national agenda. According to them, the grassroots in Kumasi remain strongly aligned with him and will not allow any external influence to sway their commitment.

Trouble began when Bryan Acheampong arrived at the venue for a scheduled stakeholder interaction. His presence triggered loud chants of “Away! Away!” from the excited crowd, who made it clear they did not welcome him at that moment. Some waved placards with Dr. Bawumia’s name, while others signaled that the minister should not interfere with what they described as the “true direction of the grassroots.”

Security officers at the scene swiftly moved to maintain calm, although the charged atmosphere persisted for several minutes before the situation normalized.

The development has sparked fresh discussions about growing internal tensions within the NPP as factions quietly position themselves ahead of the party’s next major political cycle. Analysts say the public reaction in Kumasi is another indication that the debate over the future leadership of the party is far from settled.

Party elders in the Ashanti Region have since appealed for calm, urging supporters to stay united and avoid open confrontations that could damage the party’s image, especially at a time when unity is most needed.

The NPP national leadership has not yet commented on the incident, but insiders say a statement may soon be released to address the growing concerns within the party.
