In a recent press conference held by the United Caucus of Asanteman, attended by key members and a gathering of journalists, an urgent ultimatum was issued to Della Edem, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication officer. The gathering was prompted by remarks made by Edem regarding former president John Agyekum Kuffour during his appearance on an Accra-based television program, SYV TV.
Chairman Albert Adu Sarfo opened the conference by expressing gratitude to the media for their presence and emphasized the seriousness of the allegations against Edem. According to Sarfo, during the television broadcast, Edem allegedly made “dangerous, wicked, and unconstitutional” comments, attributing Kuffour’s health struggles and his use of a wheelchair to divine punishment for his alleged sins during his presidency.
“This comment is not only unfortunate but represents a clear attempt to insult the integrity of Asanteman,” Sarfo stated, highlighting Kuffour’s significant role in the Ashanti Kingdom, which transcends political allegiances. He noted that regardless of Kuffour’s affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he retains the constitutional right to contribute to national discourse and development as a citizen of Ghana.
The United Caucus of Asanteman voiced their intolerance for such provocations. They stressed that while they have exhibited leniency and goodwill, there comes a point where respect must be upheld. “Some Ghanaians seem to think they can take advantage of the Ashanti’s unity and friendship,” Sarfo warned. He referenced previous unprovoked attacks from individuals such as Kelvin Taylor and Jonas, both residing in the United States, asserting that the continued derision must come to an end.
“Our message to Della Edem is clear,” Sarfo proclaimed. “We demand an unqualified apology to Asanteman within 24 hours. Failure to comply will compel us to take drastic actions against him.” This stern declaration reflected the organization’s determination to protect the dignity of the Ashanti people and uphold their values against what they consider disrespectful attacks.
Following Sarfo, secretary Philip K. Amoah and organizer Angel Gabriel Twumasi underscored the collective outrage within the group and reiterated the call for accountability. Akwasi Poku, the assistant organizer, also offered comments, reinforcing their stance and the importance of unity in addressing perceived injustices against the Ashanti community.
