According to a report by Modernghana on Friday, October 17, 2025, political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has questioned the real influence of Alan Kyerematen and his newly launched United Party (UP), saying the former Trade Minister’s relevance is being overstated.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, October 17, Tonto argued that the 2024 election results prove that Alan had very little effect on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance.
“If Hon. Alan was that influential, he should have chipped into that two million,” Tonto said, referring to the two million-vote drop the NPP recorded between 2020 and 2024.
“Because largely, you can assume that majority of that two million, even if they were not NPP card-bearing members, had an affinity for the NPP at a material point, which was 2020,” he added.
According to Tonto, Alan’s poor showing in the 2024 presidential election — where he garnered about 88,000 votes nationwide — exposes the limits of his political strength. “It tells you that Alan’s true weight was the 88,000 votes he got. That’s his true weight now,” he emphasized.
He continued, “Even if he prosecutes his agenda well and shares his story effectively, he may increase to about 500,000, but as it stands, the data is clear. The shift that we saw in the NPP did not go anywhere.”
Alan Kyerematen launched his new political movement, the United Party (UP), on Thursday, October 16, promising to revive the original Busia political philosophy and “return Ghana to decent leadership.” However, Kofi Tonto dismissed the idea that the new party could draw substantial support from the NPP or make a major impact in future elections.
“Alan’s influence has always been built around perceptions, not data,” Tonto said. “The numbers from the 2024 election show that he doesn’t have the grassroots support many thought he did.”
His remarks have stirred debate within political circles, as some analysts believe Alan’s new party could split NPP votes in 2028. But Tonto remains confident that the NPP’s strong institutional structure and loyal base will withstand any such challenge.
