The residents of Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region have called on the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to strictly enforce the laws against individuals who use misinformation and disinformation to ignite ethnic tensions rather than relying on unverified rumors to take action.

The public outcry follows a recent incident in which representatives of the Ayele ethnic group petitioned the Regional Police Command and the Regional Coordinating Council.

In their submissions, the group alleged that members of the Akyode tribe were plotting to disrupt the upcoming coronation ceremony of the Ayele Paramount Chief of the Ayele Traditional Council scheduled for November 7, 2026.

However, local residents and community leaders have strongly refuted the claims describing the news as false and fabricated.

The citizens maintained that the Akyode people are well known to be peaceful and law abiding citizens who are committed to harmony in the Municipality.

Rebuffing the allegations the concerned residents questioned why REGSEC failed to hold the accusers accountable or arrest those responsible for making the unverified claims against the Akyode tribe to set the record straight.

The residents pointed to a previous press release issued by the Oti Regional Security Council dated 29th July 2026 and signed by the Oti Regional Minister in his capacity as the Chairman of REGSEC, which explicitly warned that security measures had been instituted to arrest anyone who is caught in the act of raising false alarms that centered on ethnicity to create fear and panic among the public.

Community members are questioning why the individuals who raised this recent alarm were not detained or thoroughly investigated for spreading false information, which they argue, undermines social cohesion and complicates security decision making in the region.

We publish elsewhere in this edition the Regsec press statemement for public attention.
