Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has shared a frightening story about his arrest and detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
During Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent three-day campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi revealed to party supporters that he almost lost his life while in EOCO custody.
According to him, the conditions in the detention room were so unbearable that he felt his soul leaving his body. He said at a point, he began seeing the faces of his late relatives, a sign that made him believe death was near.
“I nearly died in EOCO custody. I realized I was dying after I started seeing my dead relatives while being kept in a tight room,” he recounted.
Since making this statement, the video has gone viral online, attracting massive reactions. While some Ghanaians sympathized with him and condemned the alleged treatment he received, others argued that he was only seeking public sympathy.
Chairman Wontumi’s ordeal started earlier this year when he was invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over allegations of illegal mining, fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
After honoring the CID invitation, he was arrested by EOCO officers on May 27, 2025, iccaand kept in custody.
The Deputy Attorney General later explained that his case also involved international crime investigations, making it one of the most serious probes against a political figures
Wontumi was eventually granted bail set at GHS 50 million with two sureties, a condition that was widely criticized as excessive. He was only released on June 2, 2025, after meeting those strict requirements.
With elections drawing closer, his emotional revelation is likely to spark further debate about the role of state institutions and how suspects are treated while in custody.
