Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Ghana, Ezekiel Nortey, says former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia currently enjoys the strongest visibility and recognition among aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming internal contest
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, Prof Nortey explained that Dr Bawumia’s experience and past visibility on the ballot paper have given him a clear advantage in political marketing.
“He is the most marketed person currently in the NPP. None of them, except him, has been on the ballot paper as someone vying for the presidency of Ghana. So that in itself is giving him some leverage,” he said.
He, however, cautioned that visibility and popularity do not automatically guarantee victory. “What we are doing now is like influencing an outcome that is yet to come. So people will hear ‘oh Bawumia is leading, so let us vote for him,’ or the discussion currently is that Bawumia is on top, so we should give him the nod. We must be mindful that this could also sway voters,” he noted.
His remarks come in the wake of a new Global Info Analytics survey released on August 21, 2025, which places Dr Bawumia far ahead of his rivals.
According to the poll, Dr Bawumia commands 52% support among NPP delegates, making him the clear frontrunner in the party’s presidential primaries. His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, polled 17%. Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 3%, while former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum managed 1%. Other aspirants, including Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo, each recorded less than 1%.
The findings have intensified debate within the party over the credibility and influence of such polls as the NPP prepares to select its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
