Christians must bear major blame for bribery and corruption in Ghana – Ndc National Organizer.
National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) who also doubles as a theologian, Rev Dr. Joseph Yamin has stated that Christians should bear major blame for the high rate of corruption in the country.
‘’If today in Ghana, 70% of our population are Christians, and Christianity talks about morality, why the corruption?’’ he queried.
His concerns come at a time the Ghana Integrity Initiative, the local chapter of Transparency International has expressed concern with Ghana’s stagnation in its anti-corruption rankings on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released in January 2024.
For the fourth consecutive time Ghana scored 43 out of a clean score of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries and territories assessed.
An NDC Communicator in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency who is also a church elder, Charles Obeng has opposed Yamin’s statement stating that though there is corruption in churches, Ghanaians should be entirely blamed instead of singling out Christians.
On the other hand, a member of the NPP communion team for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency Zunia Darko secunded Joseph Yamin where he asserted that every Ghanaian is corrupt citing an instance that vying for a position in church is even not free, you have to offer an envelope to get employment amongst other corrupt practices.
We can only eradicate or dwindle corruption by introducing strong policy, adding that our underdevelopment as a nation is due to bribery and corruption.
