Accra, Ghana – A wave of public discontent has washed over Ghana following revelations of significant financial losses at the Bank of Ghana (BOG) coupled with the approval of substantial payments to its board members.
A nationwide opinion poll conducted by Connectghnanews.com indicates widespread anger and demands for accountability regarding the bank’s operations.
The poll, which reached Ghanaians across various regions, highlights deep concern over the BOG’s reported loss of over Ghc 60 billion due to alleged mismanagement. The situation has been further inflamed by reports that the bank’s management recently approved Ghc 510,000 per board member, despite the institution’s precarious financial state.
While sources close to the bank claim the payments are compensation for the board’s service, the timing and scale of the approval have sparked outrage. The public is questioning how such payments could be justified when the BOG is grappling with a severe financial crisis.
Calls for Investigation and Accountability
The poll revealed a strong consensus demanding transparency and accountability. In Accra, Kwasi Morgan voiced suspicion and called for a thorough probe into the matter. He is not alone in demanding answers.
Bright Amingo and Kwabena Nsenkyire, speaking from Cape Coast and Sekondi-Takoradi respectively, described the Ghc 60 billion loss as “questionable” and joined the call for a full accounting of the bank’s finances.
Nana Yaw Agyeman, an auditor in Kumasi, went further, suggesting the case should be referred to the “Operation Retrieve the Loot” team for immediate action.
This reflects a growing sense that the BOG’s financial woes are not merely a matter of bad luck, but potentially stem from deeper issues of mismanagement and possibly corruption.
Demands for Arrests and Presidential Intervention
The calls for accountability are not just limited to investigations. Sources in Tamale, Ho, and Keta, speaking to Connectghnanews.com in an exclusive interview, demanded the arrest of top BOG management officials, arguing that the country’s major financial institution should not be used “for granted.”
Their position underscores the severity of the public’s perception of the situation.
Kwadwo Adu from Obuasi has made a direct appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene personally. Adu urged the President to take swift action on what is seen as a massive misappropriation of funds, fearing that the mishandling of the BOG’s finances could have catastrophic consequences for the institution’s stability and its employees.
He cautioned against letting those involved “run away” with the consequences of their actions.
A Nation Awaits Answers
The findings of this opinion poll paint a clear picture: Ghanaians are deeply concerned about the financial health of their central bank and are demanding clear and concrete action from the authorities. The public’s trust in the Bank of Ghana appears to be eroding as revelations of significant losses and controversial payments come to light. The pressure is now mounting on the BOG management and the government to address these critical issues head-on.
