As part of measures to solve sanitation challenges in the country, the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (GKMA SWP) under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is set to undertake 129 ultra modern toilet project for some selected institutions within its catchment areas.
The project is under the World Bank funding with additional financial support from the Ghana government.
And therefore to ensure its effective take off, a pre commencement meeting has been held where key stakeholders from the selected beneficiary institutions, consisting head teachers, Coordinators from District Assemblies, representatives from Parents and Teachers Association (PTA’s) among others were given the opportunities to be present and share ideas on the project deliberations
According to source close to the implementers of the project. construction works would be commenced on February 15 this month, as contracts have already been awarded to contractors.
Speaking to a section of the media in an exclusive interview at Beam Hotel In Kumasi, the Project Coordinator for (GAMA/GKMA SWP) Ing George Asiedu disclosed that apart from the main project focus of his outfit, the the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has decided to increase access to extend its toilet facilities to institutions (lower and senior high schools).
The rationale behind the agenda is to incalcate the habit of improving hygiene and sanitation into the students so that they would become abreast with health issues after leaving school.
Ing George Asiedu indicated that statistics show that about 42 percent of schools are having access to sanitation facilities in the country hence (GAMA/GKMA SWP) wanted to close the gap by extending its sanitation facilities to some selected institutions.
He said (GAMA/GKMA SWP) is also providing 150 units health care and sanitation facilities, out of the figure GKMA will receive 120 units while GAMA will also have its share of 30 units.
We targeted 30 units for GAMA but as at now we have increased the target base to 55 units which is now completed in Accra, Ing Asiedu told journalists.
About the GKMA current 129 projects he said 275 facilities were accessed after which 129 projects were prioritized for attention.
Ing George Asiedu related that final conclusion on the 129 protects including the design works and contract awards have been completed and it is expected that 36 contractors who won the contracts will start work on February 15 this month.
The projects would be completed by July/August this year ,Ing Asiedu hinted and advised the stakeholders to draw the attention of the contractors if they failed to report at their various sites to start work as scheduled for February 15.
Ing Asiedu further urged the stakeholders to cooperate with the contractors when they start work and show keen interested in the projects and monitor to ensure speedy work and handing over.
Stakeholders and representatives present at the pre commencement meeting include Oforikrom, Ejisu, Asokore Mampong, Kwadaso, Suame and old Tafo Municipal Assemblies respectively.
