Hon. Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has reaffirmed his commitment to championing the welfare of the elderly in Ghana. As a member of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, Ranking Member of the Private Members Bill Committee, and a member of the Judicial Committee of Parliament, Hon. Sosu has been actively advocating for the rights and protection of senior citizens.
During a recent event organized by Tabitha Ghana, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting aged persons, Hon. Sosu donated an undisclosed amount to further their cause. He praised the organization’s director, Mr. Amos Asuma Karikari, for his tireless efforts in championing the welfare of the elderly.
Hon. Sosu highlighted the urgent need to pass the long-delayed Aged Persons Bill, emphasizing that the legislation would provide critical protections for senior citizens in Ghana. “The Aged Persons Bill has been in Parliament for far too long. I will push hard to ensure its passage because it is time we take the necessary steps to safeguard the rights and dignity of our elderly population,” he said.
Mr. Amos Asuma Karikari, Director of Tabitha Ghana, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of the Bill’s passage. He also urged churches to establish aged fellowship groups, similar to youth fellowships, to support the elderly within their congregations. “It’s vital for the government to pass this Bill. Churches can also play a significant role by creating spaces for the elderly to find support and community,” Mr. Karikari stated.
Erica Blay, President of Friends Virtual Foundation, also spoke at the event, expressing her organization’s dedication to assisting vulnerable groups, including the aged. “This is our 12th project, and the second time we’re focusing on the aged. It has always been our mission to uplift the less privileged, and we pray for more years for our elderly so they can continue to be a blessing to society,” she remarked.
