A prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and renowned transport operator in Kumasi, Alhaji Aziz widely known as Chairman Soldier has sparked a fresh debate regarding Ghana’s political history and contemporary governance.
The Npp Subin Constituency Vice Chairman aspirant has remarked that the overthrow of Ghana’s first president Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was an inevitable consequence of a regime marred by alleged dictatorship and an unchecked sense of power.
The Lessons of History:
According to Chairman Aziz while Dr. Nkrumah was celebrated for leading the nation to independence in 1957, his later years in power were defined by what he describes it as “intoxication with power.”
Aziz stressed that Nkrumah’s refusal to heed counsel from opinion leaders and his shift towards authoritarianism alienated the populace.
Intoxication in power drove him to such an extent that he refused to listen to simple advice,” Chairman Aziz noted.
He further suggested that this conduct did not only led to the premature end of Nkrumah’s administration but also crippled the Convention People’s Party (CPP), leaving it stagnant and unable to regain political relevance in the decades that followed.
A Call for Mercy Amidst Legal Controversy:
Chairman Aziz’s historical reflection comes against the backdrop of Chairman Wontumi’s legal battles.
Recently Chairman Wontumi was hit with a 20 year jail term by an Accra court regarding an alleged illegal mining (galamsey) activities connected to his firm, Akonta Mining.
Aziz maintains that Wontumi’s sentence was politically motivated.
He pointed to what he perceives as a double standard, noting that many other individuals including MCEs, DCEs and various government officials are allegedly involved in the galamsey activities but are walk free in the as innocent citizens.

Appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to temper mercy with justice: Drawing parallel to his earlier historical analysis Aziz insisted that no leader remains in power forever irrespective of how much authority they wield.

Promoting Democratic Sustainability
In his appeal for a more tolerant political climate, Chairman Aziz highlighted the leadership style of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.
He credited the former administration with practicing restraint citing instances where even those who aggressively attacked the government were spared from incarceration to preserve democratic sustainability.
Aziz lamented what he views as a more retaliatory approach in current governance.
He specifically addressed the political tension involving personalities like Chairman Wontumi arguing that political differences should not be met with judicial retribution.
Chairman Aziz further cited the decisions during the Akufo Addo era to overlook issues surrounding alleged double salaries by NDC MPs as an example of prioritizing national peace and cohesion over political vengeance.
A Plea to Intellectuals and the Nation:
Chairman Aziz concluded his statement with a passionate plea to the intellectuals within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be courageous enough to advise President Mahama against trends that lean towards political arrests.
If we tolerate one another’s opinion, show love and live peacefully, we will unite the country to enhance the sustainability of our democracy.
