Outrage: Public demands for the demolition of Methodist church building constructed by alleged corrupt former Kma Mayor Osei Asibey

A section of the public is outraged over a church building constructed by former National Service Authority Executive Director, Osei Assibey Antwi, who is currently facing corruption allegations.

In 2024, the former Kumasi Mayor completed and commissioned a fully furnished storey church building at Nyamebekyere for a Methodist congregation, in honour of his mother. The foundation stone was laid by him in 2022.

Public interest in the church has intensified following a revelation by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Friday, June 13, 2025. Dr. Ayine disclosed that GH¢8,256,000.00 was deposited into an Ezwich account in the name of Osei Assibey Antwi during the 2022/2023 service year.

At a press conference, Dr. Ayine stated that the Ezwich card linked to the account was found during a search at the suspect’s home. “In the 2022/2023 service year, a total of eight million, two hundred and fifty-six thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢8,256,000.00) was deposited into Ezwich account number 1177042059, registered in the suspect’s name. Investigations show he personally received the money,” he said.

These developments have sparkemedia, particularly Facebook, where users are questioning the source of the funds used for the church.

One user wrote: “I’m sorry, church—we have to sell your building to recover our money.”

Another said: “We are coming to collect it and turn it into a clinic.”

Some condemned the church for accepting the gift without questioning its funding: “The church will never question the source of this wealth. Judgment must start from the house of God.”
