Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has justified the recent incident involving a journalist receiving slaps in an electoral environment, according to a report by MyNewsGH.
According to him, such occurrences are normal given the high tension that surrounds election periods.
Gbande further emphasized that the country’s failure to address past issues, like the recent case involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, made these events less surprising.
“This is not the first time. Afenyo-Markin slapped a police officer recently, and nothing happened yet. So when things like this happen, we understand it,” Gbande said.
He added that incidents such as these would be dealt with after the election is concluded.
He also referred to the electoral environment as inherently risky, acknowledging that such “hazards” were to be expected.
“If you are in an election, no matter what comes, there will be scratches, and so these ones are normal for the season,” he remarked.
Today, July 11, 2025, sees 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North returning to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament.
The race is between Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC.
The election has been marred by a series of delays since December 7, 2024, due to complications in vote tallying by the Electoral Commission.
Despite the challenges, the NDC are hopeful of a victory, citing their achievements in office, while Afriyie remains confident in her previous victory.
