A leaked Zoom meeting involving key figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ignited fresh controversy within the party as it gears up for the 2028 presidential primaries. The leak, attributed to allies of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, allegedly exposes discussions between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi”), and other party stalwarts, including Abronye DC.
The revelation has intensified the already fierce rivalry for the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer position.
According to sources, the leaked meeting focused on strategies to consolidate support for Dr. Bawumia’s potential 2028 candidacy, with Wontumi reportedly making bold claims about his influence in the Ashanti Region to secure Bawumia’s position. The leak, first reported on a YouTube channel, Smart Ghana Update, on July 23, 2025, has been described as a calculated move by Agyapong’s team to undermine Bawumia’s campaign and highlight internal divisions within the NPP. The video has sparked widespread debate, with some party members accusing Agyapong of orchestrating the leak to destabilize Bawumia’s camp ahead of the January 31, 2026, primaries.
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, speaking on Wontumi TV, criticized Agyapong, accusing him of faking support for Bawumia during the 2024 campaign while secretly plotting his downfall. “Kennedy’s sudden change of posture reveals his true intentions,” Ampaw stated, suggesting Agyapong’s actions are driven by personal ambition rather than party unity. This sentiment was echoed by Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, who warned that ongoing divisions could jeopardize the NPP’s chances in 2028.
Agyapong’s team, however, remains defiant. Dr. Stephen Amoah, a member of Agyapong’s campaign, dismissed claims of Bawumia’s dominance, asserting that over 260 former MMDCEs support Agyapong. The leaked meeting has further fueled speculations about Wontumi’s role, with some alleging his recent legal troubles, including a GH¢50 million bail controversy, are being exploited by rival factions to weaken his influence.
